Driving Ohio Forward

Why Ohio Matters

Ohio is located within 600 miles of 60 percent of U.S. and Canadian populations and 62 percent of the nation’s manufacturing operations and retail stores. This strategic location makes Ohio a national leader in transportation logistics as well as the air quality and environmental health issues that accompany such high volumes of commercial traffic.[i]

Transportation and Logistics Leader:

Ohio ranks first out of 50 states based on the total value of outbound truck shipments ($244 billion), third nationally based on the total value of all inbound and outbound freight ($907 billion) and fourth nationally in terms of total economic output from rail shipments ($1.3 billion).

Air Quality and Environment:

As of 2009, 31 of Ohio’s 88 counties are in non-attainment for one or more of the six “criteria pollutants” designated as hazardous to human health by the Clean Air Act (CAA) of 1970.[ii]  Ohio’s diesel soot pollution alone is projected to cause 769 premature deaths, over 1,000 non-fatal heart attacks, 14,464 cases of asthma and 83,963 lost days of work.[iii]
